Abstract

ABSTRACT The traditional manual method of assignment submission in educational institutions is often plagued with challenges such as loss of scripts, delays in feedback, high consumption of paper, time wastage, and difficulty in tracking submissions. This project presents the Design and Implementation of an Online Assignment Submission System aimed at automating the process of assignment submission, grading, and feedback delivery in tertiary institutions. The system provides a web-based platform where students can register, log in, select courses, upload assignments (with support for PDF files), and track their submissions. Lecturers and administrators can access submitted assignments, grade them, provide remarks/feedback, and manage student records efficiently. Key features include user authentication, dashboard, profile management, assignment tracking, secure file upload, and responsive user interface. The system was developed using PHP for the backend, MySQL as the database, Vue.js, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend. The development followed the Waterfall Model of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams such as Use Case, Activity, and Flowchart were used during the design phase. The implementation of this system eliminates paperwork, reduces the risk of missing assignments, ensures timely feedback, promotes transparency, and provides equal opportunity for all students. CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY An online assignment submission refers to the process by which student submit their assignment, project, or assessment through a designated online platform or system provided by educational institutions. These systems typically allows student to upload their files, provide additional information or comments if necessary, and submit their work directly to their lecturer or professors. Online assignment submission platforms streamline the submission process, facilitate efficient feedback mechanisms and often include feature such as plagiarism detection, grading tools, and tracking of submission deadlines. Evaluation is a climax and one of the most important parts of teaching learning process, be it at the pre-primary, primary, secondary or tertiary level of education. It is an indispensable tool employed to measure how far not only the student but also the teachers have fared in the teaching-learning process. Evaluating can take different forms such as take home assignment, test or quiz and terminal or end of semester examination. ( Ogbozor andAnimanjo 2003 ).This work is initiated considering the recent trends of automating business process and the application of green computing. The traditional manual assignment submission and making system can no longer satisfy the contemporary needs of lecturers and student. To create modern-day requires, researchers proposed a comprehensive academic assignment submission and management system. (Rana, Arabee andAmathlingam2021 ). The traditional approaches used in submission and management of student assessment encountered many problems, especially in a distance education setting. In tradition system of assignment submission, the student should submit a hard copy of the assignment in a fixed due date either in class or at the lecturer office, this process is a very time and effort consuming operation, and it also need extra cost.( Quteishat, Al-Mefleh and Al-Batah 2011). 1.2 Statement of the problem Many reported failure in courses through in the tertiary institutions can be attributed to the carless of the course representative or the teaching assitant who fail to submit an assignment paper to the lecturer for marking ( jones, 2003). Such careless could lead to a zero mark for the victim whose paper was declared missing or simply not found. Researchers has explored various aspect of online assignment submission, including the development of plagiarism detection algorithm, user interface design for submission platform, and the implementation of automated grading system. There is a need for further research to address the shortcoming of existing online assignment submission system and enhancing their effectiveness and usability. The methodology to address these challenges, a mixed method approach could be employed. Firstly,quantitative analysis could be conduction to evaluate the performance of existing plagiarism detection algorithms and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, quantitative researchers, such as user interview and usability testing could provide insight into students, the effectiveness of the proposed enhancement could be evaluated through several measures. Quantitative analysis could asses the accuracy of updated plagiarism detection algorithm, while usability testing and user feedback could gauge improvement in user experience and satisfaction. Additionally metrics such as submission turnaround time and system uptime could be monitored to evaluate overall system efficiency and reliability. 1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study The aim of this project is to design an online assignment submission system. 1) To develop a system for proper documentation of student’s record in the school system. 2) To create a database that will manage each student assignment submission and allow access by lecturers to access their files submitted by the student 3) To create a quick search and advance search that the student/lecturers when sorting a file. 4) To provide a system to assure equal opportunity and impartial review of student assignment submission. 1.4 Significance of the Study The study will aid lecturers to have a well-structured system for assignment submission and grading. This will eliminate paper work in their offices and improve on their efficient in managing student’s assignments. Unlike attaching files in a mailing system like yahoo mail and Gmail and sending to lecturer, this system systematically arranges assignments with respect to courses, departments and student ID, creating a more user friendly environment for both the student and lecturers. 1.5 Scope of the Study By addressing these aspects, the scope of an online assignment submission aims to create a comprehensive and effective solution that meets the needs of students, instructors and educational institutions.
