Abstract

ABSTRACT Computers are known for their wide range of uses especially in scientific and mathematical fields. However little or no thought has been given to designing a complete and thorough intelligence entrance examination on a computer system in our immediate environment. This entrance examination system is designed to assist university administration examination in attaining a standardized sample, and as such the psychological implication of such a design is very important. The design of the system is quite simple and easily understood. Its flexibility makes it amenable for future changes and amendment to either incorporate other aspects of intelligence or to be designed for any other school age or class. The question of the online entrance examination system is programmed and visually displayed on the system ‘s screen in an interactive form. The student answers the question on the computer system, immediately the question is marked and notified. The result of the examination is also displayed at the end of the examination which goes a long way to lessen the fears of students that they were marked down in the examination. Since the entrance examination is examined by the computer, time cost of manual examination is saved. Based on the virtues of internet amendment which have been made to the examination system concept by constructing a website with online entrance examination, online question setting and answer and online management by the administrator.

There have been various methods used for assessing students such as projects, pencil-written examinations, presentations, assignments, and oral examinations. Traditional Examination refers to a proper examination administered through question papers to which students respond within the sort of written answers to a limited choice of previously unseen examination questions, set beforehand and answered in examination centers where invigilators (examination supervisors) prevent communication between students and prohibit the utilization of notes or other revision aids. There has been a growing interest in recent years in developing and using Computer-Based Tests in educational assessment especially in Nigeria. The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), the body responsible for admission into Nigerian University went a step higher in 2013 with the use of Computer-Based tests (CBT) software in conducting her examination. It became a necessary and timely innovation to keep with the technological trend. In the ’90s, when students sat for JAMB, it had been kept on a pedestal of fear for many students but today it's become a norm in our academic sector. The advantages of computers are well-known and apparent. They offer students the opportunity to improve their productivity and time management when answering questions. The standardization of test administration conditions is one of the advantages offered by computer-based testing (CBT). No matter what the tests’ population size is, CBT helps students to set the same test conditions for all participants. It also improves all aspects of test security by storing questions and responses in encrypted databases and enables testers to create randomized questions and answers from vast question pools. Moreover, offering different exam formats and the immediate presentation of different types of feedback, either to students or testers, are also some of the great advantages of CBT. 1.2 Statement of Problem The challenges faced with the paper-based test are overwhelming, they include but not limited to exam malpractice, inaccuracy in marking, and delay in marking results. 1.3 Aim and Objectives The main objective of the project is to style and implement a web computer-based test system. Specific objectives of the research paper are: i. To design an online entrance examination ii. To implement the propose system iii. To test and evaluate the system 1.4 Scope of the Study This study covers the design and implementation of an online examination system, using web development methodologies, PHP Framework. 1.5 Significance of Study In the modern world with all the complexities involve in managing a university management requires well-structured and scientifically derivable information as a basis for online entrance examination for student. The survival and continuous growth relies on the management of the automated system. In some places like Europe they make use of the online for entrance examination for student this method has proven to be very efficient and met so many standardization eliminating the manual method of pen and paper. The study will contribute positively to show student their answer and admission status after the exams if they have met the necessary school perquisite. In this era of dwindling resources, the management of public and private institution, will need an effective system (online entrance examination system) with online entrance examination system human labor is saved, time and cost is maximized effectively. 1.6 Limitation of the Study The findings and recommendations of this study may be specific to the context of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and may not be directly applicable to other educational institutions with different infrastructural, organizational, or regulatory environments. The design and implementation of the online entrance examination system may be subject to resource limitations, including budgetary constraints, availability of technical expertise, and access to necessary hardware and software resources. These limitations may impact the scope and sophistication of the implemented system. The development and deployment of an online examination system may encounter technical challenges such as software bugs, compatibility issues with existing university systems, and network infrastructure limitations. These challenges could affect the functionality, reliability, and performance of the system.
