EFFECT OF COMPENSATION ON JOB SATISFACTION OF BIGHAM UNIVERSITY, KARU NASARAWA STATE
Abstract
Inability of Bingham University to properly compensate their employees to give a preferred image has been a problem in Bingham University. Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa state is faced with the challenge of employee shortage because of unsatisfactory compensation system within the University. This study therefore sought to examine compensation elements of romotion, recognition and rewards and how they affect employee job satisfaction of staff of Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa stare, Nigeria. The study adopted a survey research design whereby structured 5-poinl likert scale questionnaire was administered to a sample of two hundred and fifty-five (255) staff of Bingham University. Karu. Nasarawa stare, Nigeria. Partial Least Square (PLY-SEM) statistic was employed to rest the hypotheses formulated of which the study found promotion, recognition and reward has positive and significant effect on job satisfaction of Bigham Universiry, Karu Nasarawa State. the study recommends that employees should be well promoted in due time and universities should realign their method of recognition to employees in a way that hardworking employee are only rewarded, also the study further recommends that Universities should continue to pay attention to employees rewards since its effect was positive and significant.

It is a general understanding that job satisfaction is an attitude towards job, in other words. job satisfaction is an affective or emotional response toward various facets of one's job. A person with a high level Of job satisfaction holds positive attitudes towards his or her job, while a person who is dissatisfied with his or her job holds negative attitudes about the job. Job satisfaction is a result of employees' perception of how well their job provides those things which are viewed as important. Job satisfaction is also defined as reintegration of effects produced by individual's perception of fulfillment of his needs in relation to his work and the surrounding. Employee job satisfaction is a critical factor that influences individual and organizational outcomes. It is widely recognized that a satisfied workforce tends to be more productive, engaged, and committed to achieving organizational goals. One significant aspect that contributes to employee job satisfaction is the comFnsation package provided by an organization. The compensation package encompasses various elements such as salary, benefits, bonuses, and other rewards that employees receive in exchange for their work. Compensation is a fundamental component of human resource management. It covers economic reward in the form of wages and salaries as well as benefits, indirect compensation or supplementary pay (Ojo, 1998). Compensation emanates basically from the fact that it provides income to workers and constitutes an important cost item to the employer (Martocchio, 2011).
