EVALUATION OF THE PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SOIL AROUND MINING SITES IN MARARABA UDEGE, NASARAWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This study assessed the physicochemical properties and heavy metal concentrations of soils around mining sites in Mararaba Udege, Nasarawa Local Government Area, to evaluate the extent of alteration and contamination resulting from mining activities. The results showed that soil pH ranged from 6.27 to 7.15, indicating slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Such pH values generally promote nutrient availability but can also enhance the solubility and mobility of heavy metals, particularly under acidic conditions
Chapter One
Soil is a critical natural resource that supports plant growth, regulates water flow, and acts as a medium for nutrient cycling. The physicochemical properties of soil including pH, texture, organic matter content, moisture, and nutrient levels determine its fertility, productivity, and overall health (Badamasi et al., 2022). In areas affected by human activities such as mining, soil properties are often altered, leading to reduced fertility, contamination, and environmental degradation
