Abstract

This study investigated the role of simple charts in enhancing data understanding among undergraduate students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK). Using a descriptive survey design, data were simulated for 353 students proportionally drawn from the Faculties of Natural & Applied Sciences, Education, and Social Sciences. The questionnaire included demographic items, comprehension tests using bar charts, pie charts, and line graphs, and Likert-scale items measuring students’ perceptions of chart clarity and usefulness.

Chapter One

In today's data-driven world, the ability to understand and interpret information presented in visual formats has become increasingly important. Data visualization, the graphical representation of information and data, serves as a powerful tool for communication, analysis, and decision-making across various sectors including healthcare, education, governance, and business (Kirk, 2016; Few, 2012). The effectiveness of data visualization lies in its ability to transform complex datasets into accessible visual formats that can be quickly understood, even by individuals with varying levels of literacy and education (Cairo, 2019). Data visualization has become increasingly vital in making complex information accessible and understandable. It leverages visual elements such as charts, graphs, and maps to highlight trends, patterns, and outliers that may be obscured in raw data (Friendly, 2008). By translating numbers into pictures, visualization tools provide an accessible way to “see and understand trends, outliers, and patterns in data” (Few, 2012). In education and research, clear visualization can turn a dense spreadsheet into an intuitive story (Meyer et al., 2013). For example, when analysts face a massive spreadsheet, they often cannot discern a trend until they visualize the data; a well-designed chart can quickly reveal the story behind the numbers (Evergreen, 2017). Thus, the global community of educators and data scientists emphasizes that “data visualization is another form of visual art that grabs our interest and keeps our eyes on the message” (Cairo, 2019), making it an invaluable tool for teaching and learning. Despite its proven benefits, data visualization faces adoption challenges in many developing contexts. In Nigeria, where education faces infrastructure and quality hurdles, leveraging simple visual tools could be particularly helpful (Oladokun & Afolabi, 2015). Nigeria’s educational system is striving to improve outcomes; reports indicate high student-to-classroom ratios and uneven access to quality teaching (Adedeji & Olaniyan, 2011). In such an environment, effective communication of information through simple charts may aid both educators and students. The Nigerian government’s push for data-driven policy, such as the use of educational dashboards, has highlighted the need for data literacy at all levels (Okonkwo & Orjinta, 2018). Yet, many students still struggle to interpret data from purely numerical sources. Visual aids like charts can bridge the gap between complex data and student comprehension. Presenting information in graphic format often has no downsides; “our eyes are drawn to colors and patterns, and if we can see something, we internalize it quickly” (Ware, 2013). This underscores the value of learning through charts.
